Petro Rabigh is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Japan’s Sumitomo Chemical Co Ltd. In 2012, Petrofac was awarded two engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for the Phase II petrochemical expansion project at their refinery, 150 km north of Jeddah.

The expansion of the existing 3,000-acre facility enabled Petro Rabigh to start producing a new range of high value petrochecmical products within Saudi Arabia.

The contracts covered a full range of common utilities along with two sizeable tank farms, comprising 47 tanks and five spheres. They were some of the first major awards made by Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical under their In-Kingdom EPC programme.

Building on the quality of our work, in 2015 we were awarded a significant increase to the scope of the original contracts, including the EPC requirements for two additional tanks, two additional LPG spheres, and all the associated utilities.

As with so many Petrofac projects, the ability to deliver locally was an important factor and all of the work was led from our Al-Khobar office.
