Pioneering control of work e-learning

Petrofac has become the first North Sea oil & gas service provider to develop and introduce a complete e-learning ‘Control of Work’ training programme for offshore workers.

The online training programme aims to improve offshore safety by enhancing understanding of safe working behaviours. The package has been developed in partnership with Mintra Training Portal Limited, a leading provider of learning, training and competency solutions for the oil & gas industry. With safety as our top priority at Petrofac, the training aims to improve understanding of our expectations on work control, enhance our teams’ behaviours and complement our work towards ‘Horizon Zero’; Petrofac’s goal of zero accidents and safety related incidents.

Divided into four units of e-learning, the interactive course uses 3D animations, case studies and offshore videos; all tailored towards individual job roles. It also incorporates lessons learned from past accidents in order to promote awareness of potential risks while working offshore. The results of the training are fully tracked and online mentoring is available to all of our employees and external contractors who take part.

Walter Thain, Vice President – Operations, Offshore Projects & Operations (OPO) said: “Effective and safe Control of Work is crucial to maintaining safe operations. This programme aims to fundamentally change the overall understanding of Control of Work and its impact on operational safety. This new package of e-learning training will undoubtedly support Petrofac in our drive for Horizon Zero.”

In the first instance, the bespoke e-learning programme will be rolled-out to anyone working on Petrofac OPO Duty Holder assets in the UK. There are plans, however, to make the training programme available to all of our operations and maintenance support contracts in the near future.
