Petrofac is set to help shape the future of the offshore wind sector, following the award of a research project by the Carbon Trust’s Floating Wind Joint Industry Project (JIP).
Under the agreement, Petrofac will investigate the key electrical system challenges associated with large scale floating wind farms including deepwater substations, dynamic cables, cable connectors, and array cable layout and burial. By identifying how to de-risk technologies for use across the offshore wind sector, the study will look at how floating offshore wind could be deployed on a commercial scale in the future.

The Floating Wind JIP is a collaborative initiative designed to bring together public and private organisations that wish to investigate the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of floating wind technology. It was set up by the Carbon Trust in collaboration with DONG Energy, ENGIE, Eolfi, E.ON, innogy, Kyuden Mirai Energy, Statoil and Vattenfall with support from the Scottish Government.
