Engineering the solution for hard-to-abate sectors

We are deploying our growing expertise in delivering carbon capture projects to support leading building material supplier Aggregate Industries UK in reaching its target of achieving net zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions before 2050.

Cauldon Cement Plant

Aggregate Industries UK operates more than 350 plants across the UK, including a dry-process cement plant in Cauldon, Stoke-on-Trent, UK. Petrofac’s consulting team, based in Woking, is delivering several early engineering scopes, including feasibility and technology selection, that will identify opportunities for capturing CO2 at the Cauldon plant. The facility currently emits over 600,000 tonnes per annum of CO2 from its operations, through the burning of tyre chips, liquid solvent, solid recovered fuel (SRF), processed sewage pellets (PSP) and coal for fuel.

CO2 captured at the Cauldon facility will be transported for geological storage as part of the UK’s  Peak Cluster development. From 2030, this development aims to cut more than three million tonnes of CO2 emissions from cement, lime, and energy-from-waste plants in the Peak District, safely transporting it via underground pipeline to permanent storage under the seabed in the eastern Irish Sea.
