Bringing Bekok-C back to life

Almost a year on from contract award, Petrofac is now just months away from completing the refurbishment of PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd’s (PCSB) Bekok-C Platform, a processing facility located in the south eastern region of the Malay Basin - and OPO’s operations team has been playing a critical role.

Awarded in May 2012 the contract included the installation of three gas turbine generators and associated compressors; the upgrading of the shutdown safety and fire and gas system; and the replacement of damaged piping, vessels and equipment. Most relevant to the operations team was inclusion of the delivery of operations manuals and procedures for all systems on the installation and the organisation and delivery of new equipment and DCS simulator training.

The team, managed by Roy Armishaw, VP Operations Asia Pacific, is now providing critical operational support to ensure the people who operate the new and entirely modernised facility will meet the training and competency standards set by PCSB and the Regulator.

Roy explains, “We’ve got two operations managers and a support team delivering a competence regime and training of the highest standard on the newly designed and installed critical packages. This will ensure that the PCSB team will be ready to operate effectively once the platform is re-commissioned and handed over.”

The original contract award was significant for Petrofac as it marked a considerable step forward in the development of our offshore EPC capability. Roy adds, “This has been a great opportunity to show customers how we can combine our service offering and how it really works. To be able to develop the right competency and training packages we needed to have input to the early design and construction activities. We got that, so we can ensure the safety, integrity and operability of the platform that is handed over to the PCSB ops team later this year.”

To date, 1.5 million man-hours have been worked with no lost time incidents. The project is scheduled for completion in Q3 2013.
