ANKIT VERMA
Ankit is 26 and works as a Civil and Structural Engineer in Delhi

I studied engineering, but I really learnt about being a Civil Engineer on the job. I joined Petrofac in July 2015 as a university graduate.

I had one year of training on the job at Petrofac Delhi. It offered a real insight into the realities of the industry. The training and learning at Petrofac is amazing and there is so much to learn. Patience, flexibility and self-discipline are the important things, which will remain with me forever.

After you graduate, you are suddenly out in the crowd and must put your best foot forward. The biggest thing has been learning the correct procedure and the approach within the industry. Twenty-three graduates joined with me in 2015 and we have all made the most of our experiences. Being a civil engineer can be very challenging. We must give the optimum design to clients within the stipulated time and keep everyone happy, so I had to quickly learn discipline and flexibility and understand the culture of the job. I have always had a hunger for learning and have been lucky to work on projects like Salalah LPG, Fadhili, BPCL (Proposal), Bab Habshan and KNPC.

Currently, I am working in Thai Oil which will really test my determination. Mostly I have been working in concrete, dealing with concrete structures. There is a layout of plans and you must work at ground level and below ground level. We must understand the project requirements and find the right solutions. I have learnt that it is important to concentrate on the smallest details. Outside of work, I have a keen interest in photography and travelling, so I just want to keep on learning.
