AL TAWEELAH ALUMINA REFINERY HAS BEEN A COMPLEX YET REWARDING PROJECT FOR ALL THOSE INVOLVED. WE SPEAK TO SEVERAL OF OUR COLLEAGUES TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROJECT HAS MEANT TO THEM

The first alumina refinery in the UAE. Petrofac’s first minerals processing sector project. And, a new experience for many of those involved in the project.

Emirates Global Aluminium’s (EGA) Al Taweelah alumina refinery has been a momentous project in more ways than one. And this March, the refinery achieved first alumina – a landmark moment following several years of hard work.

As part of an integrated joint venture with Bechtel, Petrofac has been involved in the project from the beginning, through the project’s feasibility studies to construction and pre-commissioning.

Mark Cowley, Petrofac’s Project Director, says: “Petrofac was expected to bring local knowledge of the supply chain, construction contractors and materials available to buy in the UAE. This may be our first alumina refinery, but they have many similarities to downstream oil and gas facilities.”

The project has now entered its final stage, with Petrofac providing ongoing support to EGA as production is scaled up.
