Position: Graduate Piping Engineer
What is your degree in?
I have a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering.
What is your role at Petrofac?
I’m a Piping Material Engineer for our onshore engineering department. I prepare project deliverables as per client requirements and technically evaluate various vendor offers to check they’re providing items in agreement with project specifications.
Why did you choose Petrofac?
I’ve always wanted to work in a well-established technical industry. Petrofac has a strong track record in oil and gas and I had received lots of positive feedback about the company from my university seniors who were employed there. I was delighted to be hired as a Graduate Engineer Trainee!
What kind of projects do you work on?
The Mumbai office is mainly focused on upstream oil and gas projects. I first worked on a gas sweetening project and now I’m working on the Lower Fars Heavy Oil Project, which is in Kuwait, and involves the extraction of heavy oil.
What skills do you need?
Time management tops the chart. You must prioritise activities to finish your work to a high standard within the stipulated time. I would also say that great team work and effective communication skills are key.
What is your average day like?
As the project progresses, the nature of tasks vary, which is great. Some of my activities include:
Every day is challenging as you have new requirements to tackle.
What training and support have you been given?
All of the engineering graduates have undertaken one year of comprehensive training - both classroom lectures and on the job training. We’ve covered soft skills training on time management, communication skills and presentation skills. I’ve also been trained to use various software packages.
What advice would you give to any new graduates who are looking to join Petrofac?
Be dynamic and pro-active. Ask for more work, utilise new software packages and seek new activities. Think differently and of smarter ways to handle queries. Seize every opportunity to learn something new each day.
