Petrofac’s supply chain group has teams based in all our major operating centres as well as other locations, strategic to our business activities.
The main centres are in Aberdeen and Woking (UK), Sharjah (major hub for EPC projects) and Abu Dhabi (UAE), Kuala Lumpur (Malyasia) and Seoul (Korea). Smaller supply chain teams operate from Houston (USA), Milan (Italy), Mumbai and Chennai (India) and Beijing (China).
At an operational level, the supply chain group has a team of more than 400 people, comprising buyers, expeditors, logistics officers and materials controllers who are working seamlessly with our support offices.
Our international locations and experienced supply chain professionals ensure that we provide excellent sourcing, expediting and logistics support to our projects worldwide. Where necessary, we also have strong relationships with third party agencies who we can engage to enhance our service on a case by case basis.
Purchasing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment annually, with a deep expertise in high value order management, all goods and services are procured in an ethical and cost effective manner, maximising local content wherever possible, underpinned by robust business practices.
The key success factors to our supply chain protocols are:
- an operational structure which permits prompt approvals and decision making
- building and maintaining excellent relationships throughout the vendor community
- early commitment to long lead items
- heavy engagement with vendors at proposal stage
- looking and booking ahead
- pro-active expediting (desk and field), including extensive use of the support office network, resident inspectors and frequency of management visibility and visits
A recent example of the responsiveness and tenacity of our logistics teams was in relation to some high pressure (HP) vessels which were in fabrication and due to be shipped to one of our ongoing projects. The fabrication shop was in close proximity to a jetty for ease of transport; however, fabrication delays meant that the monsoon season and severe storms arrived prior to the completion of fabrication. This would have delayed the transport of the vessels by several months. Given the criticality of the timing, the teams elected to ship the HP vessels half complete by barge earlier than planned to an alternative fabricator where the final finishing works were completed and the vessels later shipped safely to site, on time.
