Conceptual engineering

Concept studies are a vital initial step in the development planning and budgeting of any offshore or onshore asset.

A feasibility screening study, which confirms the technical and commercial viability of a development, typically forms the initial phase of a concept study. We then study a range of options to typically recommend one technical concept to further develop during the subsequent front end engineering and design (FEED) phase.

Our studies cover traditional onshore and offshore oil and gas developments (both brownfield and greenfield) as well as activities in new energy including offshore wind, offshore gas storage and carbon capture and storage.

As part of an integrated field development planning project, our facilities engineers are accustomed to interfacing with sub-surface personnel to jointly develop the best sub-surface/surface solution for the asset. We understand the many issues such as well location, artificial lift and production profiles. Our workflow methods typically include ways of handling data uncertainty and costing for such variations.

We support offshore concept developments from drilling and production technology to facilities and export. Our solutions incorporate Petrofac’s extensive EPC and operations experience so that construction and operational issues are addressed at outset. We have experience in fixed platforms, floating installations, mobile production units and subsea installations enabling us to offer the most cost-effective development route for your project.

Onshore, we undertake studies for new (greenfield) and existing (brownfield) developments. We can address and solve issues concerning hydrocarbon properties, impurities, production gathering system architecture and plant/camp location to export and storage of products, power generation and enhanced oil recovery.

In the process of selecting and further defining the best development option, we include commercial and execution risks to guide and support your investment decisions.

Our concept development work is supported by a cost estimation function that reflects the latest cost information gathered from our worldwide procurement capability.
