Petrofac Pledges 600 Seedlings to United Nations Environmental Programme
4 December, 2007
Petrofac, the international oil & gas facilities provider, in conjunction with Sharjah Municipality, welcomed over 200 members of the local community at the Petrofac Tree Plantation event this weekend. The event is the latest in the on-going activities being held during Petrofac’s Environmental Awareness Month.
A protected area at Al Thalmia Reserve in Al Bataih area in Sharjah was allocated to Petrofac on behalf of the Environmental and Protected Area Authority (EPAA) and where volunteers actively spent the morning planting 600 seedlings of the United Arab Emirates’ native trees, Ghaf and Acacia, donated by the EPAA.
Governmental officials from the Municipality of Al Bataih and representatives from Petrofac, alongside the volunteers, were treated to a stage performance by children from local schools in the area before beginning the tree plantation.
Petrofac’s Engineering & Construction Sales & Marketing Manager, Kaye Krause-Whiteing said: “It was tremendous to have such a great turn-out from the local community. We hope the Environmental Awareness Month in conjunction with the Sharjah government environmental initiative, will heighten the awareness and importance of a greener society. Indeed so successful has been our Environmental Month we are very much looking forward to repeating the exercise in 2008 and sharing our vision more widely.”
Petrofac’s tree plantation is a recognised pledge to The Billion Tree Campaign founded by the United Nations Environment Programme. Sharjah municipality will tend to the protected area and it is hoped that at least 80-85 per cent of the seedlings will survive.
