In 2010, the South Yoloten gas field development project was awarded to Petrofac. Under the US$3.4 billion contract, the company is providing engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPC) work on a lump-sum basis for a 10 billion cubic metres per annum (bcma) gas processing plant along with the infrastructure and pipelines for the entire 20 bcma development. This is the largest contract awarded to Petrofac in the past 30 years, and a first to be executed in Turkmenistan.
Petrofac has offices established in the capital Ashgabat, Mary and at the project site.
Key facts about our presence in Turkmenistan:
- the South Yoloten field is situated approximately 400 km south east of the capital Ashgabat and has been announced as the second largest gas field in the world – over 700 tcf gas reserves.
- Petrofac is committed to working closely with the local community in Turkmenistan and employment of Nationals is currently between 70-80%.
- with a sustainable future in mind and an emerging oil and gas industry, Petrofac is delighted to be part of the country’s desire to enhance local skill sets. The business has set in place a local training facility to provide construction skills training

Whilst we have substantial experience of working in the CIS region, Turkmenistan is a new market for us, albeit one with considerable potential, where we would like to build a sustained presence.
